Retaining Wall Construction Methods
A retaining wall is a structure holding back thousands of pounds of saturated soil. The ones that fall over were almost always built as landscaping instead of as structure.
Poured-in-place concrete walls are the strongest option and the right call for tall walls, walls carrying a driveway above them, and anywhere a failure would be expensive. Forms go up over a reinforced footing, steel is tied into dowels from that footing, and the wall is poured monolithically.
Segmental block walls use interlocking units with geogrid reinforcement layers extending back into the retained soil. They flex slightly, cost less on medium-height walls, and look at home on a residential slope. Both types need the same drainage detail behind them.

Wall Drainage and Backfill Detail
Ask any contractor why retaining walls fail and the honest answer is water. Saturated soil weighs far more than drained soil and it pushes with hydrostatic pressure that no reasonable wall thickness resists forever.
Behind every wall we build there is a drainage envelope: 12 inches minimum of clean washed stone, a perforated drain pipe at the base of that stone wrapped or bedded in filter fabric, and an outlet daylighted to a lower grade or tied to a solid pipe that goes somewhere real.
Backfill is placed in lifts and compacted in lifts. Dumping six feet of dirt behind a fresh wall and running a machine over it is how walls get pushed out of plumb before they ever see a rainstorm.
Wall Height, Permits, and Engineering
In most of Madison County, a wall over four feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall needs an engineered design and a permit. Walls with a surcharge above them, meaning a driveway, a pool, or a structure, often need engineering below that height too.
We handle the engineering coordination and the permit submittal. That is not us being thorough for its own sake. An unpermitted structural wall is a problem that surfaces at closing when you sell the house.
Terracing is often the better answer to a tall slope. Two four-foot walls with a planted bench between them can cost less than one eight-foot engineered wall and they usually look better on a residential lot.

Retaining Wall Installation Process
Walls take longer than people expect because most of the work happens behind them where nobody will ever see it.

1. Survey and Design
We shoot existing grades, measure the retained height, and identify what sits above the wall. If it needs engineering, we bring the engineer in at this stage rather than after the footing is poured.

2. Excavation and Footing
The base trench is cut below frost depth to undisturbed soil and compacted. Poured walls get a reinforced footing with vertical dowels. Block walls get a compacted leveling pad of crushed stone.

3. Wall Construction
Poured walls are formed, steel tied into the dowels, and placed with a vibrator to consolidate around the reinforcement. Block walls are laid course by course with the base course checked for level constantly, since every error compounds upward.

4. Drainage Installation
Perforated pipe at the base, washed stone envelope, filter fabric between the stone and the soil, and a daylighted outlet. Geogrid layers are rolled into block walls at the spacing the design specifies.

5. Backfill, Cap, and Grade
Backfill goes in compacted lifts. Caps get adhered on block walls. We finish the grade above and below, seed or lay sod if that is part of the scope, and confirm the outlet is running clear.

Compacted Lifts Behind
Backfill is placed in 8-inch lifts and compacted between each one. Nobody dumps a truckload behind a fresh wall on our jobs.
Engineering When Required
Over four feet, or under any surcharge, we bring in a licensed engineer and pull the permit. It protects you at resale as much as it protects the wall.

How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering? +
Generally four feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, and only if there is nothing loading the soil above it. Put a driveway, a pool, or a structure within the wall's influence zone and you need an engineered design regardless of height. We will tell you which category your wall falls into during the site visit.
Why is there gravel behind a retaining wall? +
That stone is a drainage envelope. It gives water a path straight down to a perforated pipe at the base instead of letting it saturate the soil behind the wall. Saturated soil roughly doubles the pressure on the structure. The stone and pipe cost a fraction of what the wall costs and they are the reason the wall survives.
Poured concrete or block, which is better? +
Poured is stronger and the right choice for tall walls, surcharged walls, and anywhere a failure would be costly. Block is cheaper on residential walls under about four feet, goes in faster, and has more finish options. On a straightforward backyard slope, block is usually the better value. On a wall holding up your driveway, we pour.
Can you fix a wall that is already leaning? +
Sometimes. If it is a block wall leaning because the drainage failed, we can occasionally take it down, correct the drainage and geogrid, and rebuild with the same units. If a poured wall is cracked and rotating, that is a structural failure and it needs to come out. We will give you a straight assessment rather than selling you a patch that buys a year.
How long does a retaining wall take to build? +
A short block garden wall might be two or three days. A 4-foot wall of 60 to 80 feet in length usually runs a week including excavation, drainage, and backfill. Engineered poured walls take longer because of the footing pour, cure time before the stem goes up, and the inspection steps in between.
