Garage and Shop Floor Slabs
A garage slab and a shop slab are not the same thing, even when they are the same size. A garage parks cars. A shop takes point loads from jack stands, lift posts, and a press that weighs half a ton in a two-foot footprint.
For a detached garage we pour four to five inches with mesh and a thickened perimeter. For a working shop we go six inches minimum, and if there is a two-post lift going in, we thicken to at least a foot under each post with rebar mats sized to the lift manufacturer's specification.
Tell us about the lift before we pour. Retrofitting a footing under an existing slab means saw-cutting, jackhammering, and repouring, which costs several times what the thickened section would have cost during the original pour.

Equipment and Utility Pads
Small pads are the jobs contractors skip and homeowners end up doing badly. We pour them because doing them right takes an hour of the day and saves an expensive problem.
Generator pads need to be level, sized past the equipment footprint, and positioned so the exhaust and service access work. HVAC pads need to sit above grade so the condenser is not standing in runoff. Hot tub pads need six inches and reinforcement, because a filled spa is thousands of pounds on a small area.
We also pour AC pads, propane tank pads, dumpster pads for small commercial, mailbox and light pole bases, and pads for backup generators that the electrician needs anchored to a specific bolt pattern.

Slab Installation Process
Most slabs are a one-day pour with a day of prep in front of it. The prep day is the one that decides how it performs.

1. Sizing and Load Review
We ask what is going on the slab, including what you might put on it later. A shop floor sized for the lift you are planning next year costs almost nothing extra now.

2. Grading and Base
Topsoil is stripped, the pad is cut to grade, and crusher run is placed and compacted. Base thickness goes up where the subgrade is soft rather than just adding concrete on top of a bad base.

3. Vapor Barrier and Forms
Conditioned or enclosed slabs get a 10 to 15 mil vapor barrier lapped and taped. Forms are set to the finished elevation with any required slope toward a door or drain.

4. Reinforcement and Pour
Mesh on chairs or a rebar mat tied to the design, thickened sections formed where point loads land, then a 4,000 PSI pour placed and screeded flat.

5. Finish, Joints, and Cure
Garage and shop floors get a hard trowel or a light broom depending on whether you want a floor you can sweep or one you can walk on when it is wet. Joints are cut on a grid, then cure compound goes down.

Base Fixed, Not Buried
If we hit soft ground during prep, we dig it out and rebuild the base. Adding an inch of concrete over a soft spot does not solve anything.

Go to six inches if you work on vehicles, store heavy equipment, or plan to install a lift. The concrete cost difference between four and six inches on a two-car garage is modest compared to what it costs to fix a cracked floor.
Do I need a vapor barrier under a shed pad? +
For an unheated storage shed sitting outside, generally no. For anything that will be enclosed and conditioned, including a finished shop or a garage you plan to heat, yes. Moisture will move up through concrete continuously without one, and that causes problems with flooring, stored goods, and rust on tools.
Can you pour a slab for a pole barn or metal building? +
Yes, and the timing matters. Some metal buildings are anchored through the slab with a specific bolt pattern that has to be set during the pour. Others go up first with the slab poured inside the posts afterward. Get us the building manufacturer's foundation drawing early so we build to it instead of guessing.
How level does a slab need to be? +
Interior floors should be flat within a reasonable tolerance so flooring lays right and doors clear. Garage and shop slabs actually should not be perfectly level. We build in a slight pitch toward the door so water drains out instead of sitting at the back wall. Wash pads and barn floors get more pitch to a defined collection point.
How soon can I put a building on a new slab? +
Seven days is a reasonable minimum for setting a building or driving on it, and we would rather have ten in cool weather. Full design strength comes at 28 days. If the schedule is tight, a high-early mix can get you to working strength in three or four days for a modest premium per yard.
